MP Faces Ethics Probe Over Husband's 1% Gambling Stake
A complaint has been filed with Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission alleging that MP Suchada Sang Thanthap falsely declared her and her husband’s assets after admitting he holds a 1% stake in an online gambling website. The complainant claims the omission violates ethics laws and could lead to criminal penalties and a ten‑year political ban. The NACC will now investigate whether the asset declaration was false and whether a serious ethical breach occurred.
At 10:00 a.m. on October 19, 2026, Mr. Srisuwan Janya, leader of the Rak Chat Rak Phaendin organization, submitted a complaint to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) asking for an investigation and opinion regarding Ms. Suchada Sang Thanthap, the Bhumjaithai Party MP for Chaiyaphum’s District 4. The complaint questions whether she falsely declared assets and liabilities totalling 1.974 billion baht jointly with her spouse, and whether her admission that her husband holds only a 1% share in an online gambling website—while denying ownership—constitutes abnormal enrichment, malfeasance, intentional misconduct, abuse of power, or a serious breach of ethical standards.
The complaint stems from Ms. Suchada’s remarks during a meeting to prepare the annual Bun Kru Thup merit-making event, scheduled for October 21‑25, 2026, at the Nong Bua Daeng district office in Chaiyaphum, where she denied all allegations and said her husband’s stake is merely a 1% holding in a jurisdiction where such activity is legal.
However, a review of the asset and liability statement she filed with the NACC on March 15, 2026, which lists combined assets of 1.974 billion baht, shows no disclosure of the husband’s 1% stake in the gambling website.
Mr. Srisuwan argues that this omission may violate Section 167 of the Organic Act on the Prevention and Suppression of Corruption (2018), which penalizes the deliberate submission of false asset declarations or concealment of required information. If proven, the offense could carry a criminal penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding 10,000 baht, or both.
While the criminal penalty may appear minor, the political repercussions are far more severe: possible removal from office, a permanent ban from running for election, and disqualification from holding any political position for up to ten years under Article 235, paragraph four of the Constitution and Sections 81 and 87 of the Organic Act on the NACC.
Accordingly, the Rak Chat Rak Phaendin organization has urged the NACC to investigate and rule on whether Ms. Suchada’s actions constitute a false asset declaration and a serious ethical violation, and to pursue the matter to its fullest extent under the NACC Organic Act.
