TAT Launches Amazing Mekong Festival with 800 Drones
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is upgrading Nakhon Phanom's traditional Lai Ruea Fai festival into a national Signature Festival called "Amazing Mekong," featuring illuminated electric boats and a synchronized 800-drone light show over the Mekong River from October 24-26. The event aims to attract tourists to stay multiple nights and promote cultural tourism in the northeastern province during the Ok Phansa holiday period.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is staging the "Khong Amazing" event, featuring illuminated electric boats accompanied by a drone show of 800 units, for three consecutive nights along the Mekong River. This elevates Nakhon Phanom's annual Lai Ruea Fai festival to a Signature Festival of Thailand, offering a new experience for the 2026 tradition. The spectacle, titled "Amazing Mekong: Satanakhon from the Heavens to the Great River," runs from October 24-26, 2026, with a special pyro-drone show and fireworks on the evening of Ok Phansa, October 26, at the Phaya Sri Sattanakhon Rach square.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) organized the "Khong Amazing Amazing Mekong by Amazing Thailand" activity as part of the annual Lai Ruea Fai festival in Nakhon Phanom province in 2026. Under the concept "From the Bright Sky to the Lights River," it blends exquisite illuminated electric boats on the Mekong with a display of 800 drones in the sky, creating a new form of night-time tourism experience that connects the faith roots of the Mekong basin with modern technology.
Acting Pol. Col. Gokat Opas, Director of the TAT Nakhon Phanom Office, said the Nakhon Phanom Lai Ruea Fai festival is one of the prototype Signature Festivals that TAT is promoting as a Must-Experience in Thailand. This year, TAT extends it with Amazing Mekong, bringing light from the sky to meet light on the water, to create a new reason for tourists to visit and stay in Nakhon Phanom for more than one night, and link to tourism in nearby provinces to increase length of stay during the Ok Phansa festival period.
"TAT aims to elevate local events into Signature Festivals — cultural tourism festivals with distinct identities recognized nationally and stepping onto the world stage — by integrating cultural roots with creativity, so traditions passed down through generations can communicate powerfully with today's travelers. The Nakhon Phanom Lai Ruea Fai tradition has beautiful roots: faith, the wisdom of building fire boats, and the way of life along the Mekong, giving it the potential to develop into a Must-Experience in Thailand — an experience one must travel to feel when visiting Thailand."
"For 'Khong Amazing – AMAZING MEKONG by Amazing Thailand,' TAT intends to develop it as a TAT Signature Event that adds a modern dimension to the Lai Ruea Fai festival through the illuminated electric boat 'Satanakhon' and the 800-drone show that tells a story from the water to the sky, with Nakhon Phanom's identity at the heart of the presentation. It also links viewing experiences with hands-on learning, such as DIY miniature bamboo boat crafting and banana-leaf krathong making, so visitors can touch the creativity rooted in local wisdom even more deeply."
Highlights include the illuminated electric boat and drone show "Amazing Mekong: Satanakhon from the Heavens to the Great River," blending light innovation with creativity. The boats will be on display from October 22-27, 2026, alongside DIY workshops from 16:00-18:00, performances reflecting Isan identity, and illuminated boat processions on the Mekong from October 23-26.
Additionally, a 800-drone letter-morphing show runs October 24-25, 2026 at 19:30 at the Sri Sattanakhon Rach square. On October 26, TAT begins activities at 16:00 with a special grand finale of the illuminated boat procession and drone letter-morphing at 23:30.
