Man Smashes Glass Into Woman's Face After Handshake Refusal

A 27-year-old woman in Surin Province was brutally attacked with a glass by a 43-year-old man after she refused to shake his hand at a restaurant. The assault left her with severe facial lacerations requiring hospitalization and ongoing treatment. The perpetrator's family initially promised full responsibility but later refused compensation, telling the victim to pursue legal action instead.

The victim, Ms. O, 27, recounted that the incident occurred on the night of September 12 into the early hours of September 13, 2024. She had gone alone to her regular restaurant and was seated next to the perpetrator's table. The man, later identified as 43-year-old Virithipol, approached twice to clink glasses. She obliged out of politeness but refused when he asked to shake hands. He appeared displeased but lingered near her table, eventually knocking over a beer that spilled on her arm and phone. His friend asked if the beer had damaged her phone, and she jokingly said he should buy three bottles to replace it.

The friend brought the perpetrator over to apologize, but he was too drunk to make sense. The friend insisted he apologize and compensate her, but the victim said it wasn't necessary since she had money. However, the perpetrator never apologized. He sat back down next to her, grabbed her arm again, and when she pulled away and threw her bag down in fear, he threatened her while staring menacingly with a spoon in hand. She felt unsafe and signaled the restaurant owner to move him to his own table, which likely embarrassed him in front of other customers.

Moments later, he walked over and violently smashed a glass into her face. She never saw it coming as he had his back turned. The glass shattered, shards embedding deep into her face. She lost consciousness. Good Samaritans rushed her to Rattanaburi Hospital, then transferred her to Surin Hospital. Her injuries were severe: deep lacerations on her face, eyebrow, and left lip reaching nerve lines. She stayed one night, then recovered at home with follow-up appointments for nearly a month. Her face bears clear stitch marks.

Her mother filed a police report immediately. While she was hospitalized, the perpetrator's mother promised full responsibility, vowing to restore her appearance and holding her hand tightly as assurance. But at a recent meeting to discuss compensation, he reneged completely, telling her to take the matter to court. She is devastated that after a month of suffering, she must endure further cruelty.
