Opposition Walks Out of Whip Talks After Chair Threatens

Opposition MPs walked out of parliamentary whip negotiations after the committee chair allegedly threatened to end talks if agreement wasn't reached immediately. The opposition had requested five days for debate next week or four days for later weeks to allow internal party consultation, but the government side rejected all proposed dates in November and December. MP Nattapong Sumanotham accused the chair of acting with arrogance and partiality rather than neutrality.

On October 23, 2026, Nattapong Sumanotham, MP for Samut Sakhon from the Pheu Thai Party, in his capacity as coordinator for the opposition whip committee in the House of Representatives, posted on Facebook stating that as a member of the coordination committee and the three-party whip, he attended both days of negotiations. He emphasized the opposition wasn't refusing to cooperate, but the reality was they requested five days and 60 hours for next week's debate, otherwise the government would reduce speaking time and participants because they had prepared that way. They needed time to return to their parties, gather information, reconvene, and consult with other opposition parties.

Nattapong added that for weeks other than next week, they could accept four days to allow time for internal party discussions and coordination with other opposition parties, estimating about a week for management. Therefore, they proposed early November or the second week of November. However, the Cabinet side insisted no dates were available at all. When asked about December, they still said no.

Nattapong noted that on the first negotiation day, he asked if five days next week wasn't possible because the Cabinet was unavailable, then which five-day week might work, so they could proceed to the next question: if not possible, they could reduce to four days but not next week, for the reasons stated. But he didn't get to continue speaking.

"The chair at the meeting spoke arrogantly. I didn't want to ruin the negotiation atmosphere so I didn't respond, but it's clear the chair wasn't neutral. They even threatened that if we can't talk, then don't talk, threatening to close the meeting immediately. This is very harsh. I don't think this is how a coordination chair should behave toward political party representatives and faction representatives. This is a negotiation forum where we should find a solution through give and take, and we are legislative members with honor and dignity," Nattapong stated.

He continued that another issue was this is a parliamentary matter that must be agreed upon by the House first, but time was allowed to drag on. The first meeting was only scheduled for October 21 via a letter from the Office of the Prime Minister's Secretary setting three days: October 27-29, 2026, which hadn't been agreed upon for discussion, yet the government wanted the opposition to accept the Cabinet's schedule despite it being a matter the House must agree on first.

"By the second day, the proposal hadn't progressed. The chair played the same role, threatening that if we can't talk, then don't talk. We in the opposition saw things weren't going well. We talked for a while but got nowhere, and the chair said then we don't need to talk. We countered with proposals and tried to find a way out. When that failed, we walked out of the meeting, but must confirm we tried to find a solution before walking out," Nattapong said.

He concluded by requesting permission to attach the Office of the Prime Minister's Secretary letter that was displayed on screen before negotiations began.
