Khao Mai Kaew: the Koh Lanta cave you reach on foot, with a guide and a crawl on the way out

Tham Khao Mai Kaew has a national park ranger post at its door, but the park page says nothing about the inside. Cave-guide and travel sources describe a dark, slippery two-hour trip with a final crawl, and disagree on the route and the ladders.

Koh Lanta has a cave you can walk into, and the national park keeps a ranger post at its door. What the park's own page does not tell you is what it is like inside, which is the part worth knowing before you go.

Where it is, according to the park

The cave is Tham Khao Mai Kaew, inside Mu Ko Lanta National Park on Koh Lanta Yai. The park's page says the name comes from the many kaew trees in the area, and that the cave sits near Khlong Nin village: from the village you turn right, drive about 2 kilometres, then walk roughly 1 kilometre on foot to the viewing area.

Park Protection Unit Lt.4 is based at the cave, and the park's list of mobile signal by location names AIS as the network there. The park lists cave visiting and studying the geology among the activities it offers.

What is inside

The park page gives nothing on the interior. A Thai government tourism directory describes the cave as having beautiful stalagmite and stalactite formations, using the same wording as the park about the kaew trees. For the rest we have to rely on a cave-guide website and travel reviewers, and what they describe is closer to an adventure than a stroll.

That cave-guide site says plainly that this is "not a show cave at all". It describes several slippery places and some narrow, low sections, and says you have to crawl for a few metres to get out. The wildlife it names is bats, large frogs and spiders reaching about 10 centimetres, and it advises against touching the frogs and spiders because they may be poisonous. It suggests sturdy shoes, clothes you do not mind ruining and a change of clothes, and says fitness is required.

How the visit works

The same site says a guide is arranged at the ticket office in the last village before the cave, and that you need one to find the entrance in the jungle. Its timing is about half an hour on foot in, about an hour underground and half an hour back, so roughly two hours. Reviewers on trail and travel sites mostly agree that a guide is needed, though one disagrees.

That site's hours and price are from 2023: open Saturday to Thursday 8:30 to 17:00 and Friday 13:30 to 17:00, adults 300 baht. Treat them as a guide to what to ask, not as current. The park page says its own fee amounts are shown in an image, so we could not read a figure from it.

Where the sources disagree

The directions differ. The park describes a right turn about 2 kilometres past Khlong Nin village and then a 1 kilometre walk, while the cave-guide site describes a signposted turn-off from road 4245 leading 400 metres to the ticket office. They may be describing different stages of the same route, and we cannot tell which.

Ladders are another. Several travel reviewers describe entering by ladder and using more ladders between chambers, while the cave-guide site says no climbing gear is needed. If a ladder matters to you, ask at the ticket office.

Season

The park's seasonal closure, 16 May to 15 November, names the Ko Rok islands, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, not the cave, and the cave-guide site says it is open all year. We found no source on how the rainy season changes the cave itself, so check with the park or the ticket office on the day. The park lists 0 7565 6576 for visit enquiries.

What we could not establish

How long the cave is, how many chambers it has, whether it is open today and what it costs now. Every practical detail above except the route, the ranger post and the mobile signal comes from a commercial site or from reviewers, not from the park. The illustration at the top of this article is generated and shows a far brighter place than anyone describes inside.
