Doctors Warn Flood Victims: Fever, Calf Pain May Signal Leptospirosis
Health officials in Ratchaburi warn that people exposed to floodwater who develop fever or calf pain should get tested for leptospirosis. Dr. Pajaree Areeyarb visited flood-affected communities in Photharam District, distributing aid and noting deteriorating water conditions. She urged prompt medical attention to prevent severe infection.
Doctors warn people wading through floodwater to seek immediate blood tests if they develop fever or abnormal calf pain, as they may be at risk of leptospirosis. On October 19, 2026, Dr. Pajaree Areeyarb, Ratchaburi Provincial Public Health Officer, visited flood-affected patients and elderly residents in Photharam District, distributing relief packs and medicine. She said the current flooding is severe in many areas, with stagnant water beginning to rot, raising the likelihood of skin infections. The main concern is leptospirosis, which is spreading easily this season, especially among those with foot wounds who stay in water for long periods. She advised that after contact with floodwater, people should wash with soap and clean water, inspect their feet for wounds, and seek medical attention immediately if they develop high fever or unusual calf pain to get tested for leptospirosis and receive timely treatment.
