Backhoe Hits Anti-Tank Mine on Thai-Cambodian Border, Driver Survives

A backhoe constructing a strategic road along the Thai-Cambodian border in Surin province struck an anti-tank mine, causing an explosion that destroyed the vehicle's cab but left the driver miraculously uninjured. The construction team, led by Sanguan Khongngoen, vowed to continue the project despite the incident, stating the road is vital for military mobility and national security.

A loud explosion shook the Surin border area on October 24 when a backhoe struck a buried anti-tank mine during road construction. The incident occurred around 1:00 PM as driver Won Khamsee was excavating and leveling ground for a new road between Chong Kaban Som and Chong Prik, near border pillars 2-3 in Surin province. The vehicle hit what was identified as an anti-tank mine left in the area, blowing off the cab roof and shattering all surrounding windows. Remarkably, the driver emerged unscathed except for temporary hearing issues from the blast.

Team leader Sanguan Khongngoen, known as "Ajarn Pai" and a disciple of Luang Ta Yeun, said he trusted in the protective power of a Luang Por Yeun amulet from Wat Khao Sala Atula Thana Jaro in Surin, which he wore around his neck. He believed the amulet helped shield them from harm. Despite the scare, Sanguan emphasized that morale remained high and the crew was undeterred. "We confirm we will push forward to complete this border road for the nation," he declared. "The Thai border must have roads so soldiers can travel efficiently to defend national sovereignty. We will accomplish this mission for Thai soil."

He argued that mutual distrust forces reliance on Malaysian mediation, but domestic dialogue and compromise can resolve the conflict without foreign intervention.
