Zimbra Urges Thai Firms to Patch Email Servers Within 72 Hours
1d ago Khaosod

Zimbra, a leading global provider of open-core email and collaboration platforms, has issued an urgent warning to Thai organizations managing their own email servers to rapidly update their defenses against escalating AI-era cyber threats. The company emphasizes that known security vulnerabilities are currently being actively exploited by hackers and must be patched within 24 to 72 hours. This warning aligns with the latest report from Thailand's National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), which identifies AI-powered attacks as the country's top cyber risk for the next two years, alongside ransomware, software vulnerabilities, and phishing.

Bret Cunningham, Chief Product Officer of Synacor (Zimbra's parent company), stated that while self-managed email servers give organizations true control over data storage and security, that control comes with unavoidable responsibility. Known vulnerabilities left unpatched represent a risk organizations willingly accept. When a severe threat emerges, there is no time to debate approval authority; clear timelines and procedures must be established long in advance.

To combat these threats, Zimbra has proposed a five-step security routine for sustainable email protection: 1) Establish baseline security standards across all servers, including supported software versions, full encryption, and restricted admin access. 2) Proactively monitor threat intelligence from vendors and national cyber agencies, cross-referencing with internal system logs. 3) Prioritize risk based on external accessibility, active exploitation, and business criticality. 4) Set predefined patching deadlines, with actively exploited vulnerabilities requiring resolution within 24 to 72 hours. 5) Verify patch completion and conduct retrospective intrusion checks to detect any prior compromise.

Zimbra stresses that waiting for regular maintenance cycles is no longer a safe option for internet-connected email servers, urging Thai organizations to establish clear, pre-defined remediation deadlines, especially for vulnerabilities under active attack.
