Thailand Braces For Heavy To Very Heavy Rain Oct 18-25
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a heavy to very heavy rain warning for October 18‑25, 2026, affecting southern, eastern, central and northeastern regions. It warns of possible flash floods, overflowing streams and landslides, and advises mariners of wave heights over three metres. Residents are urged to take precautions and monitor official updates.
The Thai Meteorological Department announced on October 17, 2026, the first heavy to very heavy rain warning (Bulletin 260/2569) effective from October 18 to 25. For October 18‑20, the southern and eastern regions will experience continuous rain with heavy to very heavy downpours in some areas. From October 21‑25, the lower northeastern, central, Bangkok and vicinity, eastern, and upper southern regions will see increased rainfall, heavy to very heavy rain in places, and occasional strong gusts.
The public is urged to guard against strong winds, intense rain, and accumulated rainfall that could cause flash floods, overflowing streams, and landslides, especially on slopes near waterways and low‑lying areas. Avoid travel through repeatedly flooded routes, particularly low‑lying spots that may suffer short‑term inundation.
The warning attributes the early rain to a monsoon trough crossing the lower south combined with a southwest monsoon over the lower Andaman Sea, later shifting northward over the upper south, upper Gulf of Thailand and east, while a high‑pressure system or cold air mass from China spreads over the upper north, upper northeast and the South China Sea.
In the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, where thunderstorms occur, wave heights are expected to exceed three metres. Mariners should navigate with caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm areas.
For safety, residents should plan activities and travel carefully during this period, follow updates from the Meteorological Department via its website http://www.tmd.go.th or hotlines 0‑2399‑4012‑13 and 1182, available 24 hours a day.
