Police Chief Orders Performance-Based Promotions for 2026
The Royal Thai Police Commissioner has ordered a performance-based promotion cycle for 2026 covering ranks from Deputy Superintendent to Police Sergeant, with a hard deadline of November 30. The directive emphasizes transparency, measurable results, and rotation of underperforming officers in key enforcement areas such as drugs, cybercrime, and illegal immigration. Agencies must justify all nominations with evidence and conduct thorough background checks to prevent unqualified appointments.
Another shake-up in the force as the National Police Chief issues an urgent directive for the 2026 annual appointment cycle covering ranks from Deputy Superintendent down to Police Sergeant. Signed by Pol. Gen. Samran Nuamma on October 22, the order mandates that all Royal Thai Police units base promotions on transparency, fairness, verifiable merit, and seniority. The process began October 1 and must conclude by November 30, with orders taking effect December 7.
The Police Chief directs commanders to consider rotating officers engaged in drug suppression, cybercrime, transnational crime, gambling dens, entertainment venues, and illegal foreigner crackdowns. If work quantity or quality declines, or there is no tangible performance, those officers should be transferred to other suitable positions.
Promotion nominations for higher ranks must have clear reasons and evidence. Agencies must prepare data on both suitable and unsuitable candidates with supporting details. If no name is proposed from the seniority roster, a fair and verifiable explanation is required.
For investigators seeking promotion, they must meet prescribed qualifications and tenure standards, with priority given to active investigators. Inter-unit transfers are permitted based on willingness, service necessity, and without disrupting personnel administration. Station chiefs or section heads appointed to non-leadership roles may proceed under guidelines, considering willingness or service necessity.
Background checks on qualifications, tenure, and experience are ordered, especially for crime prevention and investigation positions, to prevent unqualified appointments. All units must strictly follow Police Act Section 29 on confidentiality. The 2026 appointments will be judged on verifiable performance, particularly the deployment of police strength to key posts linked to crime suppression and public safety.
