PM Briefs NSC on Global Intelligence, Flags Economic Risks
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin received a comprehensive intelligence briefing from the National Security Council covering global, regional, and southern border issues. Officials said current international unrest may affect Thailand's economy but poses no immediate security threat, while the southern situation remains under continuous review with a follow-up meeting scheduled for October 22.
NSC Secretary-General General Chaiyapruk Didyasarin disclosed after a meeting with the Prime Minister at Government House at 3:45 p.m. on October 21, 2026, that the Prime Minister had been briefed on intelligence matters covering Thailand overall, the Thai-Cambodian border, and the southern region. The meeting underscored the government's increased emphasis on security affairs, discussing global and regional situations that could affect Thailand's security without focusing on any specific issue. When asked whether current global unrest required special attention, General Chaiyapruk said they were informed of the situation; intelligence units confirmed there might be some economic impact but no security impact yet. Asked if today's discussion on the southern border provinces would feed into a new strategy, he said it was part of the process, mostly short-term analysis of ongoing situations, while medium- and long-term plans are being prepared by relevant agencies with continuous evaluation to refine those plans. On whether the Prime Minister wants the NSC to play a larger role beyond southern border security, General Chaiyapruk said the Prime Minister prioritizes security, tasking the NSC to continuously report and monitor operations to improve practices. He noted that global and regional security threats have changed significantly from the past, so intelligence units must constantly assess and adapt. General Chaiyapruk also revealed that a meeting of agencies handling the southern border situation will take place tomorrow (October 22).
