Pattaya Motorcycle Taxis Revert to Orange Vests After Governor Order
Chonburi's governor has reversed a controversial order requiring Pattaya and Bang Lamung motorcycle taxi drivers to switch from orange to dark blue vests at their own expense. Drivers welcomed the return to orange, citing better visibility and safety, and are hoping for a refund of the 550 baht they paid for the unpopular blue jackets.
Pattaya motorcycle taxi drivers have returned to wearing their original orange vests, stating that orange is definitely better than dark blue because it is more visible and safer for both drivers and passengers. Regarding the 550 baht paid for the blue vests, they hope for a refund.
October 22, 2026 – Progress in the case of changing motorcycle taxi jacket colors in Pattaya City and Bang Lamung District, Chonburi, from "orange" to "dark blue" at a cost of 550 baht, which sparked criticism over safety and financial burden on drivers.
Subsequently, Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong, as chairman of the provincial committee, signed an announcement canceling the prescribed jacket style for public motorcycle taxis, allowing them to return to the original color.
Recently, reporters visited the Thong Okrae (Nong Prue) motorcycle taxi stand in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, and interviewed Mr. Ja, 51, a motorcycle taxi driver, who revealed that orange vests are definitely better because they are visible from a distance due to light reflection, making them safer for both drivers and passengers. The dark blue vests looked too dull and did not suit motorcycle taxi drivers.
On the 550 baht cost, he said they must listen to the collective opinion on whether they want a refund, but he thinks if the government is willing to refund it, that would be very good because motorcycle taxi income has dropped 60-70%, insufficient to support families, and even 400-500 baht is a lot for drivers.
Ms. O, 39, also disclosed that she personally thinks returning to orange is better. After trying the blue vests for a few days, she found customers were not used to them and might not recognize them as motorcycle taxis, reducing hires. She also commented on the 550 baht vest cost.
