Attorney General Forms Task Force to Pursue Thaksin Bankruptcy Over Tax Debt
The Attorney General's Office has formed a joint task force with the Revenue Department to pursue bankruptcy proceedings against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra over a 17 billion baht tax debt. The move follows a petition by former Democrat MP Wichitra Petchthong seeking asset seizure before the statute of limitations expires in March 2027. The Supreme Court previously ruled Thaksin owes the tax debt from a 2025 case.
Attorney General's Office spokesperson Prayut Phetkhun revealed that a joint task force has been formed to investigate and pursue bankruptcy proceedings against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. This comes after former Democrat Party MP Wichitra Petchthong submitted a petition to the Attorney General on October 21 at the Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Road, urging expedited action on the bankruptcy case.
The petition cites Constitutional Sections 50(2) and 10, seeking to seize assets to satisfy the Supreme Court tax case No. 6890/2025 ruling of over 17 billion baht. Wichitra alleges Thaksin intentionally concealed shareholdings and sold shares to evade tax payments, constituting serious misconduct. With the statute of limitations expiring March 27, 2027, the petition requests immediate bankruptcy filing and a court order to protect assets.
Prayut explained the Revenue Department referred the case to the Attorney General's Office on September 30, coinciding with a leadership transition. Since new Attorney General Kowit Sriphairojn took office, the Bankruptcy Litigation Department has been directed to form a task force led by a deputy director. A meeting between the Bankruptcy Litigation Office and Revenue Department was held on October 19, confirming active progress. The task force's findings will determine whether proceedings move forward, with the Attorney General's Office committed to transparency on both facts and legal reasoning.
