Forest Rangers Seize 200,000 Meth Pills on Thai-Lao Border
Forest rangers and Border Patrol Police seized about 200,000 methamphetamine pills hidden in a forest area along the Thai-Lao border in Ubon Ratchathani on October 16, 2026. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin said the operation highlights the ministry’s role in preventing drug trafficking through forested routes. No arrests were made, but the evidence has been turned over to local authorities for further action.
On October 17, 2026, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin disclosed that he had received a report from Yongyut Nakawirot, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, regarding rangers from the Bunthrik-Yotmon Wildlife Sanctuary in Ubon Ratchathani who, together with Border Patrol Police and local officials, seized approximately 200,000 methamphetamine tablets hidden in forest areas along the Thai-Lao border. He said the operation underscores another important task of the ministry: preventing and suppressing drug trafficking that may exploit forested areas and natural routes to enter Thailand. Suchat added that the ministry's duties go beyond conserving natural resources, protecting forests and wildlife; forest officers also play a key role in monitoring and supporting law enforcement, especially to curb the smuggling of drugs through forest and natural corridors along the border, which requires effective coordination among forest officials, border police, local authorities, and other agencies. The incident occurred on October 16, 2026, when the Chong Tao forest protection unit of the Bunthrik-Yotmon Wildlife Sanctuary joined forces with a special task force of Border Patrol Police Company 225 and Bunthrik district administrators to patrol the Thai-Lao frontier in Bunthrik district, Ubon Ratchathani. Acting on a tip, officers inspected a forested area near Ban Non Noi in Phon Ngam sub-district, Bunthrik district, and at about 2:00 p.m. discovered a blue fertilizer sack containing roughly 200,000 meth pills hidden in the woodland, although no suspects were apprehended. The seizure site lay about 3.5 kilometres from the Thai-Lao border. Initially, officers confiscated the evidence and assigned the Bunthrik district office to pursue legal proceedings. The ministry stressed its commitment to stopping illegal activities in forested areas, pledging to continue cooperating with relevant agencies to monitor and block the use of forests as conduits for narcotics while carrying out its core mandate of conserving and protecting natural resources, so that woodland is not exploited for unlawful purposes.
