Chinese Man's Eye-Slapping Cure Causes Retinal Detachment

A Chinese man in the central region experienced a detached retina after repeatedly slapping his eye that was twitching, believing the condition signaled bad luck.

In many cultures, eye twitching is considered an ill omen, though different regions have different remedies. In some areas, people make three cross marks around the eye using three fingers as a symbol of the holy trinity. While this method may not work, it's certainly better than violently slapping one's own eye.

According to beliefs in many countries, a left eye twitch indicates good fortune is coming, while a right eye twitch signals misfortune. Unfortunately for Mr. Le from Wuhan, his right eye twitched continuously for several days. Despite trying various treatments, including warm compresses, his anxiety only increased over time.

Eventually, Mr. Le searched online for remedies and found advice recommending eye slapping to stop the twitching. He repeatedly slapped his right eye and surrounding area for three consecutive days. While the twitching finally stopped, a more serious problem soon developed.

Mr. Le noticed his field of vision had become severely narrowed, with sight only directly ahead while peripheral vision on both sides had nearly disappeared. After hearing about his unusual treatment method, doctors diagnosed him with retinal detachment and rushed him into emergency surgery. He eventually regained his vision, and doctors expect a full recovery.
